President Nangolo Mbumba has unveiled the Dr. Hage G. Geingob N$60 commemorative banknote.
The banknote pays tribute to the late President, honouring his 60 years of service to Namibia, encompassing his life in exile.
The issuance of the banknote aligns with the Bank of Namibia's governing Act, reaffirming its role in safeguarding national identity through currency.
The Bank of Namibia made the decision to honour the late Geingob in February 2024 after his passing to celebrate the lasting impact he left on the people and the nation.
The commemorative note will be in circulation this month.
President Mbumba underscored that the commemorative banknote cements Dr. Geingob's vision for economic recovery and shared economic prosperity for all.
"His leadership prioritised championing the diversification of our economy through groundbreaking initiatives in renewable energy, trade, and industrialization, among others. Dr. Geingob, through visionary leadership, built bridges and developed networks to establish Namibia as a frontier for new economic initiatives and opportunities across our region, the continent, and beyond for the welfare of all our citizens."
The unveiling of the N$60 Dr. Hage Geingob commemorative banknote also marked the recognition of 35 years of constitutional democracy, as well as honouring the architects of the country's supreme law.
"In this vein, we pay tribute to the members of the Constituent Assembly, both those who have gone before us as well as those still among us. These are the pioneers who worked tirelessly with Dr. Geingob to craft the very foundation of our democracy. Their wisdom, foresight, and commitment to justice, peace, democracy, and stability ensured that Namibia's Constitution became a globally respected document."
Vice-President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah applauded the pursuit of unity in diversity, which remains one of the core common ideals of both late Geingob and late Founding President Sam Nujoma.
Nandi-Ndaitwah says Namibians gave impetus to the ideals of the former statesmen in how they dealt with the collective grief Namibians experienced as a result of the loss.
The Bank of Namibia hailed the late Geingob's legacy as one that will transcend generations, including the establishment of the Welwitschia Fund.
The fund is administered by the Bank of Namibia and Governor Johannes !Gawaxab says it is a testament to Geingob's unwavering dedication to economic sustainability.
"Through prudent management and strategic investment, the Welwitschia Fund will continue to serve as a cornerstone of Namibia's economic resilience, empowering our people and safeguarding the nation's wealth for years to come. Your Excellency, I am happy to report that the Fund now stands at N$460 million from the N$270 million invested in 2022 when it was launched. This progress is all due to Dr. Hage G. Geingob's strategic foresight."
The Dr. Hage G. Geingob N$60 commemorative banknote is the third to be unveiled by the central bank in honour of the country's leaders.
