The National Housing Enterprise (NHE) continues to make strides in making home ownership a reality for the less privileged members of the society.

The town of Ondangwa is the latest where NHE has delivered 64 houses constructed for N$20 million.

The 64 homes built at Ondangwa serve as a reminder of the government's commitment to ensuring that the provision of affordable housing remains central to NHE.

In a speech read on his behalf, the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, said it is the government's dream to see every Namibian own a house of their own rather than live in deplorable conditions.

"Housing is and will continue to be one of the key national development priorities, as it is an important vehicle for addressing poverty and inequality as well as social harmony, advancement, and surely political stability in our country."

NHE's Chief Executive Officer Gisbertus Mukulu said the completion of the seven houses in a record seven months is applaudable and is an indication that the housing enterprise wants to accelerate the construction of houses in order for Namibians to have the opportunity to buy them.

"Local authorities, please, please, when it comes to the pricing of your land, think of the beneficiaries. Because at the end of the day, you will definitely benefit in the forms of your rates and taxes, and your income base will also increase, and that is my request."

The beneficiaries and new homeowners say they are privileged to have made it to the list and that they will no longer pay rent, but rather their monthly installments are going to their homes, which is a great achievement.
