NHE and Gobabis Municipality deliver 65 homes for low-income residents

The National Housing Enterprise (NHE), in collaboration with the Gobabis Municipality, constructed 65 houses with the aim of ensuring that low-income earners in Gobabis have a roof over their heads.

Gobabis Mayor Melba Tjozongoro says the council is working tirelessly with various key stakeholders to bring much-needed development to town. 

Minister of Urban and Rural Development orders Outjo municipality to re-advertise CEO position

The Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, has ordered the Outjo Municipality to re-advertise for the position of Chief Executive Officer.

This follows allegations of irregularities and an alleged flawed interview process last year.

The municipality has been without a CEO since April last year after Josel |Urib retired. 

|Urib's contract was extended but abruptly cancelled in August last year.

Local Authorities urged to spearhead economic development

The Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, has called on local authorities to lead local economic development by creating an enabling, conducive environment for both investors and job seekers.

He made the call during the official opening of the Association of Local Authorities in Namibia (ALAN) Indaba held at Luderitz. 

The Indaba aims to unlock investment, partnership, networking, and business opportunities for local authorities. 

Regional, Constituency Development Fund bill tabled

In a move aimed at bolstering regional and local development efforts, the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, presented the Regional and Constituency Development Fund Bill to the National Assembly. 

The bill seeks to establish a dedicated fund to financially support development projects in both regional and local authority areas.

The proposed legislation is a response to the challenges faced by regional councils in fulfilling their mandates due to limited financial resources. 

Tumweneni informal settlement formalised

The Rundu Town Council is finally taking action to improve the status of the Tumweneni informal settlement.

The action comes after a directive from the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, in August 2022 to formalise Tumweneni.

Tumweneni came into existence in 2018 through illegal land grabbing.

Upon his visit to the informal settlement, Minister Uutoni advised the town council to see to it that service is brought closer to the informal settlements. 

Since its establishment, the population of Tumweneni has increased.

PDM concerned over Gobabis, Omaheke audits

The Minister of Urban and Rural Development has reaffirmed his commitment to addressing audit and debt management challenges within regional and local authority councils.

This statement comes in response to queries posed by Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) MP Inna Hengari, who sought explanations about the Omaheke Regional Council and Gobabis Municipality audit reports.

Karasburg TC threatened with suspension

The Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, has threatened the Karasburg Town Council with suspension if it does not reverse irregularities related to non-compliance with applicable laws and prescribed administrative processes.

In a letter to the council last week, Uutoni directed them to take corrective measures for the irregularities he highlighted.

Youth encouraged to own land at Wlotzkasbaken Settlement

The Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, has called on the Erongo Regional Council to ensure that young people can afford plots at the Wlotzkasbaken settlement.

There are a little over 100 houses in the coastal settlement of Wlotzkasbaken, a place where boundary fences or walls are not encouraged.

Located between Swakopmund and Henties Bay, the Erongo Regional Council has been busy dividing the land into plots to accommodate more people.

NHE experience growth in the past few years

The National Housing Enterprise (NHE) loan book has grown from N$493 million in 2015 to N$1.6 billion now.

The NHE had experienced slow growth in the past seven years due to financial constraints, land tenure issues, the unavailability of serviced land, and property rights.

However, the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, expressed appreciation to the current board for its efforts.

The outgoing board chairperson, Sam Shivute, pointed out some of the challenges the entity faced during its tenure.
