After years of being reduced to a dry basin due to insufficient rainfall, the Avis Dam, located outside Windhoek, is now at full capacity.
The City of Windhoek last released water from the dam 14 years ago but reopened the sluice gates today.
Built in 1933, the dam has only experienced significant water levels a few times, the most recent being in 2007.
Since then, it has remained dry year after year, except for 2011 when the City of Windhoek briefly opened the sluice gates.
The recreational areas around the dam, once a sanctuary for locals, became a distant memory during the dry years.
With the return of rain, water has flowed into the previously dry riverbed, and there is hope that activities around the dam will fully resume.
Firefighters, safety teams, families, and environmental enthusiasts gathered at the site.
River levels are expected to continue rising, and residents are urged to take precautionary measures.
Today, Avis Dam has transformed into a full-capacity reservoir.
