With winter just around the corner, green schemes such as Sikondo in Kavango West are preparing to plant their winter crop starting this week.

Acting farm manager Maxwell Nghidinua says the seeds are ready, and 14 hectares are set aside to plant potatoes.

This is the mondial potato, grown at the Sikondo Green Scheme.

Originating from South Africa, it's favoured for its high yield, early maturity and excellent drought tolerance.

Sikondo has been growing this potato for more than 13 years now, and the acting farm manager says it's a hit with the local market.

One of the warehouses at Sikondo is filled with potato seeds, ready for planting.

These potatoes have two planting windows and take about four to five months to mature.

Nghidinua is optimistic that this year's July harvest will exceed last year's yield, further adding that small-scale and communal farmers need to be empowered to join the potato production process, saying at the moment, potatoes are mainly grown by large commercial farms.

The acting farm manager says all in all, the future looks bright for potato production in Namibia.
