The number of asylum seekers from Namibia in the United Kingdom has reduced since the introduction of a visa regime by that country in 2023.
High Commissioner Charles Moore spoke to NBC News following a farewell courtesy visit to State House, stating that prior to the introduction of the visa regime, these numbers were unsustainably high.
"So, introducing a visa regime was the only option available to us, and it didn't blame anyone for the Namibian government, and I spoke to them regularly. There's nothing that the Namibian or the British government could do to stop the asylum seekers, so since we introduced the visa regime, there's been almost a complete stop. The introduction of the visa regime has been effective in that regard. However, we have recognized that it increases the cost and inconveniences for genuine Namibian travelers, businesspeople, and senior government officials and ministers. We acknowledge it has an adverse effect on them, and I am sorry; that is unfortunate, but we had to impose a regime. We keep this under review, looking for opportunities in the future to make the visa process more user-friendly, quicker, and less inconvenient, so hopefully it won't deter people."
