A procession carrying the remains of liberation stalwarts who were reburied at the Heroes' Acre today passed through parts of Windhoek ahead of the official reburial ceremony.

They left their motherland with one purpose; to fight for the liberation of Namibia. Today, decades later, their remains returned to an independent Namibia, passing through the streets of the country they had sacrificed to free, this time in caskets.

Among the eight were the remains of Simon Niilenge and Festus Nehale, who died in South Africa and were exhumed and repatriated for their final resting place in their motherland.

The procession was more than a solemn journey to the Heroes Acre. 

It was a symbolic passage through a free Namibia, a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for the country's independence.
