The ||Kharas Governors Cup concluded in style, with the Namib Circuit Football Zonal Team winning the 2025 edition after securing maximum points in the group stages and defeating !Garib 2-0 in the finals.
Four zonal teams, comprising all seven constituencies in the region, competed in the two-day Governors Cup, with the Namib Circuit Football Zonal Team being crowned the overall football champions after defeating !Garib in the finals.
Although both teams had little preparation time for the tournament, the quality of football on the pitch did not disappoint.
Namib took advantage of a few errors from !Garib to take maximum points and be crowned the 2025 ||Kharas Governors Football champs.
“My whole approach to this game was very tricky because we had two games today before the finals. Our boys were so tired and they did not get enough rest, but the approach was just to go for the game. So they gave it their best and played for the win, and that is what they did. I am very happy with what they did” Namib Circuit Team Coach Johannes Natangwe said.
Namib Circuit team captain Shilombo Paulus said “Regarding our game plan, it was just to keep everything simple, not to hold the ball too much. In the previous game, they won us in the midfield, so what we learned in the previous game was not to hold the ball too much. We then used our wingers”
Despite losing in the finals, !Garib's team coach said that the tournament provided an opportunity for his team to improve their style of play and prepare better for future tournaments.
“We only had one game before the tournament, and these guys grew into the tournament, getting a combination and playing well. I am very glad that we ended up in second place and gave them a run for their money” Linus Visser said.
The organizers of the 2025 ||Kharas Governors Cup expressed gratitude to the sponsors, players, and spectators who came to witness the games.
“The tournament went well. First of all, I want to thank the Lord that there were no serious injuries in any of the sports codes. All the kids were safe, and we had a very good tournament. It was played under very good circumstances. The competition was very tough-rugby, soccer, netball, and volleyball-all those codes were very tough. We would like to thank our main sponsors, FNB, Namibia Grape Company, Seaflower, Novanam, and, once again, the Keetmanshoop Municipality that hosted us at this beautiful stadium” Russel Titus said.
The rugby finals, played between PK De Villiers and Suiderlig High School, ended 14-0 in favor of PK De Villiers School, while the netball finals between Namib and Kalahari ended in a draw.
