The accident scene where two trucks collided on Thursday, about 10 kilometres north of Otjiwarongo, has been cleared.

The head-on collision, involving three trucks, resulted in fuel leakage from two tanks containing sodium cyanide, commonly used in the extraction of precious metals such as gold and silver.

The area is now considered safe to use, and debris and wreckage have been cleared off.

The Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism confirmed that one of the trucks belongs to Coleman Transport and was transporting 26,000 kg of sodium cyanide from the Walvis Bay port to the B2Gold mine in the Otjozondjupa Region.

Ministry officials inspected and monitored the clean-up operation, which was carried out by the chemical owners under the supervision of the Environmental Commissioner's Office.

Meanwhile, the police Community Affairs Officer, Senior Inspector Maureen Mbeha, said the names of the two deceased persons have not yet been released.

She added that an investigation into the culpable homicide case has been launched.

Mbeha urged motorists to observe the traffic rules and regulations and exercise caution when on national roads.
