The Coastal Spinning and Drifting Club held an Easter bash to raise funds for the vulnerable and further keep young people off the streets in Swakopmund.

Car spinning and drifting as a sport have been gaining momentum in Swakopmund over recent years.

The Coastal Spinning and Drifting Club's president says the participants rev their engines and burn tires for the adrenaline rush and entertainment.

Ebrahim Abrahams added that the events are held to raise funds needed to support the well-being of various community members.

Charity programs supported annually include feeding children at soup kitchens.

"We have hosted charity events where we helped our community in Swakopmund. This has had a really positive effect, not just from the racing itself but also from the street races that are happening on the coast. Statistically, we have decreased those numbers by having this pitch here where guys are allowed to spin in a controlled and safe area. We have hosted events for kids in our community who needed medical examinations. We raised a maximum amount of 60 thousand dollars for our community.

The spinning and drifting race field further attracts young people who are prone to social ills such as drug and alcohol abuse at the coast.

"We have a really big impact on the younger generation, like myself. I have a son, Papa Duls; I recently handed the steering wheel over to him. These activities teach the younger generation more about discipline and how to control a vehicle when it's uncontrollable. The younger guys come here to join us, even if they are not drivers, to change the wheels and learn basic mechanic skills; they learn it from us."

"The spectators know me as Baster; I have been spinning for 1 year and 4 months now. Spinning keeps me away from the streets and keeps me away from the wrong things. Spinning is what I love."

"I'm 17 years old; I do spinning to stay out of the streets and not get on my parents' nerves because if we're at home, they just want to fight us. But I came here today to show my talent to the people, and I love spinning because it's in the family."
