Roseta !Nawases has become the first woman to receive a Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science from the University of Namibia.
Her doctoral research, titled “The Nature of China's Relations with Africa: A Comparative Analysis of Sino-Botswana and Sino-Namibia Relations,” adopts a constructivist approach to examine the political and economic dynamics shaping China’s engagements with Botswana and Namibia.
The study reveals a key contrast: While Namibia’s relationship with China is deeply rooted in historical solidarity from the liberation struggle, this has led to fewer economic benefits compared to Botswana. In contrast, Botswana’s clear articulation of national interests and proactive engagement strategies have secured more favourable economic outcomes from its ties with China.
Additionally, the research highlights how China’s structural bargaining power allows it to capitalize on institutional and governance weaknesses in both countries.
