The Trade Union Congress of Namibia (TUCNA) marked International Workers' Day at Lüderitz with its core message, centred around the welfare of the workers and better employment conditions.

The day was celebrated under the theme, "Industrialisation, Trade, and Decent Work for Social Justice."

Trade Union Congress of Namibia President Paulus Hango called for a fight against poor working conditions and urged employment that speaks to social justice.

"In order for Namibia to continue with rapid growth, we need to change our mindset and move away from old policies and instructions that keep inequality in place; we must adopt a system that rewards merit and encourages everyone to climb the ladder."

Hango urged trade unions to work together for the improvement of employees' livelihoods.

"We need to have a society that has access to basic necessities like food, shelter and healthcare. Trade unions must work very hard and fight for the Social Security benefits fund to be part of the conditions of employment and to cover the vulnerable community."
