The Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup has grown beyond just football and netball, with new sporting disciplines eyeing a place on the big stage.

During the 23rd edition hosted in Outjo, the Namibia Professional Boxing and Wrestling Control Board made a surprise appearance—signaling a possible new chapter for the competition.

The Newspaper Cup is an annual competition featuring all 14 regions of Namibia and includes football and netball.

Initially launched in 2001 as a football-only tournament, the event expanded in 2018 during its 18th edition to also include netball.

At the recently concluded Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup in Outjo, the Namibia Professional Boxing and Wrestling Control Board embraced the opportunity to attend the event.

Their presence didn't go unnoticed, drawing interest from many attendees.

Board Chairman Armas Shivute explained the purpose of his and his team's visit to Outjo.

While he did not specify a timeline for boxing to be formally introduced into the Newspaper Cup, the newly appointed chairman said preliminary steps are being taken toward that goal.

Local resident and parent Russell Bester believes that adding more sporting codes such as boxing will benefit young people across the country.

Shivute further emphasized that this initiative could increase the pool of amateur boxers who may one day represent Namibia on the international stage.

Outjo hosted the 23rd edition of the Newspaper Cup. While next year's host region has yet to be confirmed, both the //Karas and Hardap regions are in contention.
