A former employee of the Katima Mulilo Town Council, Namasiku Kasika, who was arrested by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) in the town on Tuesday, made her first appearance before the Katima Mulilo Magistrate’s Court.
She faces three charges: using her office for gratification, contravening the Anti-Corruption Act No. 8 of 2003; corruptly using a false document, contravening section 35 of the Anti-Corruption Act of 2003; and money laundering, contravening the Prevention of Organised Crime Act No. 29 of 2004.
It is alleged that in March 2020, Kasika imposed a fine of N$2,000 for an illegal water connection on a town resident who allegedly paid only N$1,500 to Kasika.
It is further alleged that Kasika paid only N$750 to the Katima Mulilo Town Council.
This resulted in her receiving a final warning and a 12-month suspension, which was later changed to dismissal after the council sought a legal opinion from their lawyers.
