Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare has commended the Oshakati Town Council for its commitment to community development, cultural preservation, and economic transformation.
Dr. Ngurare made these remarks at the Oshakati Totem gala dinner, an event which raised over N$814,000 for the 13th edition of this year's Oshakati Totem expo.
Ngurare described the totem expo as a powerful platform that contributes positively to the town's economic growth and development.
He emphasised that Namibia is a nation rich in diversity, where traditions, values, and totems form the foundation of national identity.
The Premier said cultural values and norms connect people to their ancestors, their communities, and to one another.
"In this regard, the totem expo is not merely an event; it is a tapestry woven with strands of heritage, commerce, innovation, and unity. It is a platform where the past meets the present and where culture becomes an engine of economic empowerment."
The Prime Minister praised the totem expo as an example of what local authorities can accomplish when vision is paired with dedication.
He expressed pride in how the event has grown over the years, now offering greater visibility, voices, and value to communities.
The expo, he noted, unites people from across regions and sectors, fostering cultural exchange and strengthening national cohesion.
"As governments, we recognise the importance of initiatives like these. They align with our national goals under Vision 2030 and our NDP strategic goals, particularly in areas of economic diversification, youth employment, local governance, and cultural tourism."
The town's mayor says the council is pleased with the growth and popularity the totem expo has garnered over the years, attracting sponsors as well as exhibitors from across the country.
"Oshakati Totem Expo is not only a cultural display but also an economic platform. It creates space for local entrepreneurs, SMEs, artists, and youth to showcase their talents and products. It facilitates dialogue between tradition and innovation, and, through events like tonight's gala, it mobilises resources to ensure the success and sustainability of the expo for years to come."
This year's expo is slated for the 30th of May to the 7th of June.
