Namibia continues to play an active role in solving global challenges through international parliamentary dialogue. This was highlighted by Swapo Party MP Emma Muteka when she tabled a report in the National Council on the country's participation in the 148th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly, held from 23 to 27 March 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The IPU Assembly brings together lawmakers from around the world to discuss key issues such as peace, democracy, human rights, and sustainable development.
"The IPU Assembly brings together parliamentarians to discuss international problems and to make recommendations and resolutions in order to take action on these problems," said Muteka. "The Namibian delegation attending the IPU Assembly customarily includes MPs from all parties represented in both houses of Parliament—namely the National Assembly and the National Council."
The Assembly meets twice a year, offering a platform for countries like Namibia to raise national and international concerns, while also learning from global peers.
Muteka noted that the Namibian delegation to the Geneva meeting was led by Prof. Peter Katjavivi, former Speaker of the National Assembly, and Victoria Kauma, Vice Chairperson of the National Council.
Muteka urged fellow lawmakers to remain involved in global conversations, stressing the importance of Namibia’s voice in international decision-making.
"Namibia must continue to be part of shaping a better world," she said.
