PDM MP calls for protection of local music

Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) MP Inna Hengari has tabled a motion in the National Assembly calling for an urgent debate on the overwhelming presence of foreign music on local radio stations.

The motion aims to promote local music and cultural identity by addressing the dominance of foreign music over local airwaves.
 
The motion highlights a pressing economic and cultural challenge facing the Namibian Society of Composers and Authors of Music.

The society collected N$2 million in royalties, of which N$152,000 was paid to 65 sister international societies.

MICT holds cybersecurity awareness workshop

Lüderitz to host Miss Namibia and Miss Teen Beauty pageants

The harbour town of Lüderitz will host this year's Miss Namibia and Miss Teen Beauty pageants.

The announcement was made by nbc Director General Stanely Similo and the Chief Executive Officer of the Lüderitz Waterfront Company, Fluksman Samhuel, in Windhoek.

The event was attended by the reigning Miss Namibia, Jameela |Uiras, and Miss Teen Namibia, Oriana Ribeiro, as well as all 20 of the finalists for Miss Namibia and Miss Teen Namibia.

UNAM law students turn cemetery into garden

The University of Namibia's law students have inaugurated a project tagged "Cicero Law Firm and Graves into Gardens'.

The project is aimed at transforming the Oponganda Cemetery in Windhoek's Katutura Residential Area into a more pleasing setting.

The Graves into Gardens Project is more than just an environmental initiative, it is an expression of the community's dedication to dignity and respect.

Report on management of Bwabwata Communal Land submitted

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs has submitted its comprehensive report on the management of Bwabwata Communal Land.

Drawing from a petition presented by the Hambukushu Traditional Authority, the report unveils a multitude of findings and recommendations.

Namibians reminded to use natural resources sustainably

The Ministry of Higher Education, Technology, and Innovation (MHETI), together with the National Commission on Research Science and Technology (NCRST), launched the Bio-Economy Strategy in Windhoek.

Although the bio-economy consists of numerous stakeholders in diverse sectors, the function of coordinating the implementation of the national bio-economy strategy will rest with the National Commission on Research, Science, and Technology for the period 2024–2029.

Concern over alarming state of global ecosystems

The Secretary General of the SADC Parliamentary Forum, Boemo Sekgoma, emphasised the urgent need for environmental stewardship on this year's World Environment Day. 

The theme, "Our Land, Our Future," highlights the critical focus on land restoration, combating desertification, and enhancing drought resilience.

Sekgoma's statement underscores the alarming state of global ecosystems. 

She cited data from the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, which reveals that up to 40% of the planet's land is degraded, impacting half of the global population. 

BUSINESS TODAY | NWR records a 3% revenue increase

Namibia Wildlife Resorts' saw a revenue increase of 32 percent in 2022.

The state-owned enterprise's revenue jumped from N$294 million in 2022 to N$387 million last year, resulting in a profit of N$46 million.

Presenting the company's 2023 annual financial report, NWR Chief Financial Officer Brian Masule highlighted significant progress in terms of its strategic objective of financial sustenance.

The aim was to reduce its loss by 231 percent from a loss of N$35 million to N$46 million in profit.

Kavango East officials attend public relations and media management training
