Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has paid tribute to the visionary leaders who lit the torch of the liberation struggle across the African continent.
While joining other African leaders in commemoration of Africa Day, President Hichilema also granted freedom to 943 inmates from the confines of Zambian prisons.
Upon setting the prisoners free, the Zambian head of state emphasised that he was illuminating the path of redemption, shining the light of forgiveness, and renewing their lives.
President Hichilema said his decision comes at a significant time as the nation joins the rest of the continent to commemorate Africa Freedom Day, a day dedicated to honouring Africans for overcoming their struggle against enslavement.
Earlier in the day, the Zambian head of state led his cabinet ministers and members of the diplomatic corps in laying wreaths at the Freedom Statue in honour of the fallen heroes who lost their lives to liberate the African continent.
Later on, at the Zambian State House, President Hichilema presided over an investiture ceremony, where distinguished individuals were honoured for their various exemplary contributions to African freedom.
The State House event was full of pomp and splendour, as several cultural performances took centre stage to entertain the invited guests.
