The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN)'s Supervisor for Registration at Kamanjab Constituency, Kizzy Dudu-Murorua, has cautioned the 21 private vehicle owners contracted for the upcoming by-election against conduct that could compromise the integrity of the election process.

Dudu-Murorua warned drivers not to be seen near drinking establishments or entertainment spots during the election period, saying any breach could result in the immediate cancellation of their contracts.

“OK, so basically these vehicle owners are, once we have contracted your vehicle to be used for electoral purposes during these by-elections, you as a vehicle owner are not allowed to park this vehicle at a political establishment or entertainment places, and you are also not allowed to transport voters or election agents in this vehicle. This vehicle is exclusively to be used for ECN from the date of the contract to when the contract ends,” she said.

She also stressed that only officially authorised drivers may operate the vehicles, and any changes in the designated driver must be supported by a police declaration.

The primary responsibility of the contracted drivers is to transport polling teams according to a schedule issued by the presiding officer. They are also expected to obey all traffic regulations and must not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

A total of 94 election officials have been trained and organised into 18 teams, ready for deployment on June 17.

The by-election will be contested by the Swapo Party and the United Democratic Front (UDF).
