12 May has officially been declared Nujoma Day, in honour of the late Founding President and Father of the Namibian Nation, Dr. Sam Nujoma.

The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus, made the announcement during the latest cabinet briefing.

The day will further be observed as Tree Planting Day, to promote service and honor the legacy of the late Founding President.

"A commemorative day to promote community service, initiatives for the nation to honour the legacy of our founding President and Father of the Namibian Nation, Dr. Sam Shafishuna Nujoma. Cabinet also then directed the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology to devise and spearhead an awareness campaign strategy for Nujoma Day to inform the Namibian Nation."

The Sam Nujoma Foundation proposed declaring Nujoma's birthday as National Tree Planting Day.

This was because of Nujoma's environmental legacy, noting his final symbolic act of planting a tree, inspiring the initiative.
