President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has described late war veteran Lazarus !Guiteb as a hero of note, whose legacy will live on.

Her message was read on her behalf by Deputy Prime Minister Natangue Ithete at the official memorial service, which took place at Otjiwarongo.

The 83-year-old !Guiteb died on the 15th of last month.

!Guiteb was described as a fearless activist who displayed passion for justice during the liberation struggle and was recognised for his contribution.

"Comrade !Guiteb was awarded and recognised in 2002 by the late His Excellency Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, founding father and father of the Namibian Revolution, with the Liberation Medal (Bronze). In 2005 the late His Excellency Dr. Nelson Mandela, Founding President of the Republic of South Africa, presented him with the Award of Honour for his selfless contribution to the struggle for democracy, as well as, in 2021, the late H.E. Dr. Hage G. Geingob presented to Comrade !Guiteb the honour of being Grand Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the Eagle, First Class."

In her tribute, the widow, Theresia, said her husband made a profound difference in the lives of those around him.

"For the past 20 years we shared laughter, challenges, and an unwavering bond of love. Through his struggles and ailments, I found strength in our love. Lazarus embodied resilience and courage. Reflecting the words of Nelson Mandela, what counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived; it's what difference we have made in the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead."

Otjozondjupa Governor John ||Khamuseb said, !Guiteb led a colourful political career amidst life-threatening situations. But he was not deterred.

The Chairperson of the Namibian Former Robben Island Political Prisoners Trust and Swapo Coordinator Imms Namaseb also paid their tributes.

Member of Parliament James Uerikua read a message on behalf of former president Hifikepunye Pohamba, who commended the late !Guiteb for his bravery.

!Guiteb will be buried in Otjiwarongo tomorrow.
