A joiner from Rundu, Rozita Tjilunda, says their line of work produces waste products that could generate more income.
Tjilunda's workshop in Rundu's industrial area produces copious amounts of sawdust every day.

She says not having the means to process it further is like watching money go down the drain.

"We throw away money. Imagine this? We can make charcoal out of it. We need an investor who is willing to invest to buy the machinery worth N$200,000 for us to make charcoal out of it."

The founder of Kayowo Trading CC says the machine that turns sawdust into charcoal costs about N$2,000, but investors are needed to turn the waste into profit.

Tjilunda explains that processing about 100 planks can produce one tonne of sawdust, which in turn can be used to make charcoal, a product currently in demand.

"If you have 3 tonnes and times it, you can get about 200,000. I did the research out of it," she stated.

She has been in this business for 3 years. During this time, she has moved into a bigger workspace and increased her employees from two to seven.

She also opened her own furniture shop 4 months ago.

"What made me open the shop is because there are clients. Sometimes they do orders, and those orders, especially the doors, are in demand. People are building constructions; they need doors, so they are always putting in orders, so it's like, I am delaying my clients. It's better for me to open a shop where I can display what is in demand, whereby the tables, the chairs, and the doors are there," Tjilunda added.

Tjilunda is the founder of the only female-owned carpentry, joinery and fitting business in Rundu.
