Mariental Municipality has taken the lead to strengthen urban resilience through the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) under the Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) initiative.

The MCR2030 is a global initiative that strengthens local resilience through advocacy, knowledge sharing, city-to-city learning, and cross-sector partnership.

The municipality, in partnership with UNDP and GIZ, held a three-day urban risk-informed urban development planning workshop, which focused on developing a disaster risk reduction strategy plan.

Stakeholders from local authorities attended the follow-up workshop held in Mariental.

UNDRR Regional Office Associate Programme Management Officer of MCR2030, Carolyne Mengich, said her expectations from the workshop are "having an inclusive disaster risk management strategy that speaks to the needs of the different segments of the society.' And then secondly, we need to ensure we have a structured committee that is pushing for resilience within the municipality."

Mariental Municipality's Chief Executive Officer, Paul Nghiwilepo, said, "We have done an analysis and a profile of all the potential disasters that we can face as a town, so this plan will then entail all those potential disputers we have identified."
