Zambia, in partnership with UNICEF, launched the first-ever malaria vaccine, making it one of the first countries to roll out this particular immunisation programme.

Malaria is endemic in all provinces of Zambia, significantly impacting public health, especially for children under five and pregnant women.

In 2024, Zambia reported an approximate 17% decrease in cases and a 27% decrease in deaths compared to 2023, attributed to interventions like indoor spraying and insecticide-treated nets.

The country is also implementing new strategies, including the launch of a malaria vaccine for children and pregnant women, which is expected to yield a positive impact.

Malaria is a major public health challenge throughout Zambia and is present in all ten provinces.

It is the leading cause of illness and the second-highest cause of death, particularly for children under five and pregnant women.

According to the Ministry of Health, in 2024, there was a significant reduction in cases and deaths compared to the previous year, resulting from public health interventions.

On Monday, Zambia launched a malaria vaccine programme for children, becoming one of the first countries to roll out the vaccine.
