Menschel Beukes (33) told the court on Friday that he was responsible for the drugs that led to the arrest of Naomi Fisch and her boyfriend, Steven Schneiders, who are facing charges of dealing in drugs and money laundering.
Beukes, a father of six, began testifying in support of Fisch, who is applying for bail following her arrest in December last year.
He testified that he knows Fisch and Schneiders, as he is a customer at their tuck shop in Rehoboth.
According to Beukes, earlier on the day of the arrest, he had bought cannabis and half a mandrax tablet at Block A in Rehoboth. He then went to the accused persons’ tuck shop to buy a cool drink.
Beukes told the court that while he was at the tuck shop, police officers arrived and identified themselves as members of the drug squad. He said he panicked and threw the drugs away.
He testified that the police later linked those drugs to Fisch and Schneiders, leading to their arrest and subsequent charges.
He maintained that the drugs did not belong to the accused persons and that they were arrested for substances he had discarded near them.
Earlier, Beukes’ mother spoke to NBC News, where she urged the court not to grant her son bail.
She said her son had been forced to take the blame for Naomi Fisch, but at the same time, she asked that he be held accountable and punished for his own criminal actions.
The bail hearing continues.
