Classes were cut short for learners at Otjivero Combined School at Omitara, following a wasp outbreak that disrupted normal school activities.
The school's principal, Paul Nunuheb, says the situation is something the school and the Omitara community have never experienced before.

"So the moment that the school started, we discovered this outbreak of the wasps. That is what I can call it, an outbreak, because it's the first time in the history of the school and Omitara. It's not only the outbreak at the school but everywhere in Omitara."

Lesson hours have now been shortened.

"It is a big disturbance for the education of the learners.  The moment we arrived here, we discovered that the wasps already had a lot of nests; every tree had a nest. "In one tree, you can say there were over 100 nests there," he explained.

Nunuheb thanked the Omaheke Regional Education Directorate for responding quickly to the matter, saying their swift intervention has helped protect everyone at the school.
