To improve livelihoods in the Fransfontein area of the Kunene Region, the Environmental Investment Fund (EIF) of Namibia and the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform built a mini desalination plant at the Petrusfontein farm, about 30 kilometres from the settlement in the mountains.

Constructed under the Water Softening Project, it produces up to 2,000 litres of water per hour, providing a sustainable solution to water challenges in the area.

The facility provides access to clean, safe drinking water.

Through the project, the Agriculture Ministry and the EIF have built 17 water facilities across seven regions in the country.

Grateful for the provision of clean water, residents of the Petrusfontein farm used the handover of a desalination plant by the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform and the Environmental Investment Fund to voice concerns and appeal for government intervention.

Community members highlighted the urgent need for a conservation facility, a clinic, and a kindergarten.

They also raised concerns over poor roads, noting that heavy rains often damage infrastructure and limit access to basic services.
