The Ovaherero and Ovambanderu communities gathered in Swakopmund to commemorate and honour the victims of the 1904–1908 genocide.
The communities marched through the streets of Swakompmund as they paid homage to thousands of Ovaherero and Nama who died during the genocide.
Men, women, and children died in concentration camps due to hunger and all forms of slavery at the hands of the German regime.
Speaking at the commemoration, one of the leaders of the OvaHerero Traditional Authority, Hoze Riruako, stated that the Ovaherero, Ovambanderu, Ovatjimba, Ovahakaona and the Nama people are destined not only to rewrite their history but also to restore the hope of their people.
Dr. Riruako said these communities are living proof that they are survivors.
"They may be silent, but we speak for them; we will ensure that they are not lost or forgotten because of you, and this moment is a call for all Namibians to stand shoulder to shoulder with one another to prevent this ugly chapter from being repeated anywhere in the world again."
Swakopmund Mayor Suamma Kautondokwa called for unity as Namibia reflects on one of the darkest periods in history.
Kautondokwa emphasised that the period remains a painful chapter in Namibia's history, but it also stands as a testament to the resilience and strength of the affected communities.
"This commemoration serves as a testament to the resilience, courage, and enduring strength of a people who refused to be erased from history. It is through gatherings like this that we ensure the stories of our ancestors are preserved as a foundation upon which we continue to build a more just and united society. As we reflect on this tragic past, we must also recognise the significance of remembrance as a tool for healing. It is through acknowledging our history, honestly and courageously, that we create space for reconciliation, understanding, and progress."
She also emphasised the importance of ensuring that future generations understand the country's history, as Namibia continues to build a society rooted in dignity, equality, and justice.
