Suspended Landless People's Movement (LPM) member Joseph Isaacks has denied any misconduct leading to his suspension from the party, pending investigation.
The party suspended Isaacks last week over statements in a local daily newspaper that allegedly tarnished its image.
At a press conference, Isaacks denied opposing the party's values and ideological convictions as outlined in its constitution.
"The engagement with the media arose in the context of clarifying matters that had already entered the public domain," he said. "I did not initiate the disclosure of any internal information. I was approached by a media person and responded with the intention of ensuring that the record was accurate and not misleading. My conduct was therefore aimed at clarification and accountability, rather than causing harm to the party."
Isaacks, former ||Kharas Regional Council chairperson, also denied speculation that he and other members are planning a rival political party. "You can see what I am wearing – I am a proud, bona fide LPM member. I refute that; I condemn it to the core because we are not establishing a new party. I am still an LPM member. You know I am suspended. The problem is that this suspension is out of order. You don't know how long you are suspended or for what. You only heard you have put the party's name in disrepute."
Isaacks said he wrote to party leadership requesting his suspension be set aside, adding that he reserves the right to pursue external avenues to challenge it.
