The Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT) has launched its annual Ministerial Sports Games in Grootfontein, with a focus on raising awareness about wildlife crime and human-wildlife conflict.
The games, taking place at Rietfontein from 1 to 6 June, were preceded by a parade through Grootfontein aimed at creating awareness about the fight against wildlife crime, a challenge in the region, particularly on commercial farms.
Speaking during the official opening at Omulunga Stadium, Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism Executive Director Sikongo Haihambo said wildlife crime remains a concern in Otjozondjupa and other parts of the country, making public awareness essential in combating poaching and other illegal activities targeting wildlife.
“Our wildlife and our communities are counting on us; therefore, while we are here interacting in the sports field, we must also use this time strategically between matches and during our evening gatherings. I want to see you actively discussing the anti-poaching strategy that each of your regions implements."Sikongo said.
He added that government, conservation stakeholders and local communities all have a role to play in protecting wildlife and promoting coexistence between people and animals.
“A day without us experiencing an incident that day is isolated. We are experiencing human-wildlife conflict on a daily basis, whether it gets to us or gets into our ears or not. What we need as a country is to maintain a balanced ecosystem to educate our people to provide information for them so that they know how to handle the situation that they may be confronted with.” he added.
The sports games have brought together ministry employees from across Namibia, providing an opportunity to promote teamwork, employee wellness and unity while reinforcing conservation messages.
“I encourage all the participants to enjoy the day or the whole week, compete in the true spirit of sportsmanship and make lasting memories. Whether you win or not, your participation already makes this event a success.”Mayor of Grootfontein, Moritz Gaingob said.
The Kavango Region enters this year's competition as the defending champion after winning the previous edition of the Ministerial Sports Games. Kavango is also expected to host the next edition of the event.
The annual games form part of the ministry's efforts to promote employee wellness while creating awareness of environmental and conservation issues affecting Namibia.
