St Michael's Roman Catholic Primary School in Outjo, Kunene Region, hosted its annual weekend tournament, bringing together seven schools to compete in various sporting codes.
The school's principal, Isai Ndjukuma, said the tournament forms part of the school's fundraising efforts to upgrade its netball and soccer fields.
Learners from Jack Francis, Marssen, Outjo Academy, Otjikondo, Outjo Primary, and Eddie Bowe Primary School from Khorixas participated in netball, football and chess competitions, which started on Friday and concluded on Sunday.
“The main purpose of this event is to bring teachers, learners, and community members together to promote teamwork. Another objective is to raise funds for the school. The funding we receive from the government is insufficient to meet all our needs, so this event offers an opportunity to generate additional income. Our plans include improving our sports facilities, as they still require upgrades.”
Ndjukuma said the tournament also serves as a platform to identify talented learners who can represent their schools at larger competitions in the region and beyond.
“We want our learners to be exposed to different levels of competition and to showcase their talents. Everyone has different abilities, and this event allows them to demonstrate those talents. We also want to attract more schools to participate. We therefore call on members of the public and potential sponsors to assist us as we work towards improving our sports facilities.”
Funds are also needed to purchase a school bus.
At the tournament, St Michael's, Jack Francis, and Eddie Bowe advanced to the semi-finals in various sporting codes.
In netball, Eddie Bowe finished first with 24 points, followed by St Michael's with 14 points.
In chess, Otjikondo won with eight points, while Eddie Bowe finished second with four points and St Michael's third with two points.
In soccer, Outjo Primary defeated Jack Francis 1-0 to claim the title.
Learners at the event also shared their experiences.
