Learners from Ngcove Junior Primary School in Rundu, Kavango East Region, will no longer be taught in corrugated iron sheet classrooms.
This comes after the school received a total revamp, which includes 12 new classrooms, ablution facilities, and an administration block.
The Ngcove Junior Primary School was started by the San community for learners under a tree in the Ndama location about twenty years ago.
In 2019, the Ngcove Junior Primary officially became a government school but still struggled with overcrowding and inadequate sanitation facilities.
The school, which started with only 65 learners, now has more than 480 learners.
Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare visited the school late last year and vowed to do something about the school's conditions.
The Premier returned to Ndama to officially handover and inaugurate the refurbished school.
“The official inauguration of this school is more than the opening of a building. It is a celebration of resilience, determination, and the power of education to transform lives. What began as a small learning space under a tree has grown into a recognised government school that serves hundreds of learners from the community.”
Dr. Ngurare says furniture for the school will have to be sourced locally.
“We took this decision, if not last year, then early this year. We have given an exemption through the Ministry of Finance that when it comes to sourcing furniture in schools as well as other public institutions, that furniture must be sourced locally. And therefore, we want to see chairs in these classes and many other classes being developed and constructed locally so that they can provide employment. If we are constantly importing this furniture, we are exporting jobs from other places.”
Construction of the school was done by August 26 at a cost of N$17,2 million.
