At least 50 households from the San community at Nkurenkuru's Extension 5 have received food donations from Ruguru Investment. The donation is worth N$85,700.
Ruguru Investment is one of the companies allocated fishing rights in the Kavango West Region.
According to the company, the donation forms part of its corporate social responsibility to support vulnerable communities in the region.
The company handed over maize meal and fresh fish.
Vice Chairperson of Ruguru Investment CC, Elia Kamati, says, "We are people from Kavango, and we live here. You will know which person is in need, who slept with hunger, and who is faced with what challenge. So we thought, for now, let's focus on the San people. As a company we have a mandate to give back to the community and not only focus on self-growth. We are helping his community today, and we won't end here; we will continue helping as much as we can."
Ruguru Investment also donated food items worth N$43,500 to Dema village.
The community headman Tomas Haipanda welcomed the donation, saying it will provide immediate relief to families facing food insecurity.
"Thank you very much for your efforts. May you continue this kind gesture by helping more needy families."
One of the beneficiaries, Namvhura Mparo, said such support is important while calling for long-term development projects to be rolled out in their community.
"What we need are projects; even if we are given water and gardens, we will manage. Even though we have shebeens around here, before we go there, we will first water our gardens where we plant cabbage and onions. They should also give us a market area so that we can sell our vegetables and wild fruits. The main problem is that we are labelled as lazy and only wait on the government. When we go to sell the vegetables, we will get money and use it to buy even cosmetics for our children that are at school and even pay for their school needs."
Michael Mukuve, senior administrator at the Nkurenkuru Constituency office, advised the beneficiaries not to sell the food items but to feed themselves.
