The Oshana Region of the Namibia National Teachers Union (NANTU) has launched the Oshana Annual Teachers Tournament under the theme, "NANTU Building a Healthy Bond Through Sport," during a launch and sponsorship unveiling held at the NANTU regional office.
The tournament is scheduled for 24 to 26 July 2026, with teams expected to compete in various sporting codes at Oshakati Independence Stadium, Uukwangula Stadium and GSKA Stadium.
NANTU Oshana Regional Chairperson Elizabeth Mutaleni said the tournament provides an opportunity for teachers to come together, promote wellness and strengthen relationships through sport.
"As a region, we find it fitting to partner with our local businesses and institutions and call the Namibian teachers together and then have such a gathering, just to unwind, take care of our health, and they say it's only a healthy teacher that can build a healthy nation."
The tournament was first introduced in 2007 and was held for ten consecutive years before taking a three-year break. It serves as a platform to promote wellness, teamwork and unity among educators from all 14 regions.
The games will feature sporting codes such as netball, soccer and volleyball, with different teams expected to participate.
Sanlam Allianz is the main sponsor of the tournament, contributing N$30,000 towards teachers' wellness and team-building activities. Old Mutual is the co-sponsor with N$11,500, while FNB sponsored trophies, medals and balls for soccer, volleyball and netball worth N$10,000. Metropolitan sponsored water bottles, T-shirts and caps to be used during the tournament.
"Our purpose goes well beyond just financial services, so we are basically committed to help and strengthen communities to live with confidence, and as our values stand, we are committed to wellness, we are committed to empowerment and that is exactly what entails this sponsorship from SANLAM ALLIANZ." Ismael Ashipala , Oshakati Branch Manager said.
Old Mutual Area Manager-North, Obed Mushaandja, reiterated the company's commitment to supporting teachers.
At Old Mutual, we have what are called stakeholders. Teachers are our stakeholders because Old Mutual cannot exist without customers. Without giving you the numbers, we have many customers and most of them are teachers."
Meanwhile, Oshakati FNB Namibia Branch Manager Toini Amakali said FNB remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote wellness, unity and national development through strategic partnerships such as the Oshana Annual Teachers Tournament.
"At FNB Namibia, we are honoured to contribute to a platform that promotes unity, teamwork, mental health, cultural integration and wellness among teachers. These are values that resonate strongly with us because strong communities are built by healthy, connected and empowered people."
With support from various partners, the tournament is set to provide teachers with an opportunity to connect, compete and promote wellness through sport.
