The Minister of Urban and Rural Development, James Sankwasa, emphasised the importance of embracing cultural roots and creating employment while at it.

Minister Sankwasa was speaking during a gala dinner aimed at raising funds for the 9th Zambezi Bream Festival & Cultural Expo.

Sankwasa added that communities need to develop the rural area for the urban area to be stable.

"Let's stick to our culture; it's helpful in tourism, and it's helpful in employment. Employment does not mean going and looking for a job; that's not what employment is all about. When you are self-reliant, you are self-employed."

Katima Mulilo Mayor Kabende Kabende highlighted that the platform has grown beyond an exhibition and into a celebration of rich cultural heritage.

"Tonight is not only about raising funds; it is about building partnerships, it is about investing in a vision, and it is about positioning the Zambezi region as one of Namibia's premium tourism and cultural destinations."

Kabende added that the success of the festival cannot rest on the town council alone and requires collaboration between the public sector and development partners.

The expo, he added, provides an opportunity for local businesses to showcase their services and create employment.
