The Namibia Media Professionals Union (NAMPU) has called for an open-door relationship with the NBC, encouraging journalists and media practitioners to join the union for protection, representation, and support.
NAMPU President Shelleygan Petersen, Secretary General Jemima Beukes, Deputy Secretary General Charmaine Ngatjiheue, and Secretary for Mobilisation Otto Gotlieb paid a courtesy visit to NBC, where they engaged management on areas of collaboration and support for media professionals.
Secretary General Jemima Beukes explained.
"We are here to request an open-door policy with NBC so that journalists and media practitioners can have access to the support and protection that a union provides. We believe in working together with media houses to address challenges and strengthen the profession."
The engagement also explored possible areas of cooperation, including artificial intelligence (AI) training for newsroom staff, mental health support initiatives for journalists, and addressing labour-related challenges within the sector.
Petersen emphasised that AI should be embraced as a tool to support journalism rather than replacing journalists.
"Artificial intelligence is not here to replace journalists. It is a tool that can assist us in improving our work, but the role of journalists remains important in producing credible and ethical journalism."
Petersen further shared NAMPU's experiences in successfully resolving labour disputes and supporting members in workplace-related matters. Discussions also touched on labour migration and challenges affecting media practitioners.
NBC Director General Menesia Muinjo welcomed the engagement, saying collaboration between media stakeholders is important in strengthening the industry.
"The media is a family, and we welcome engagements that seek to strengthen and support media practitioners. There are many areas where we can collaborate, and we look forward to building on this relationship."
NAMPU vowed that it remains committed to advocating for fair wages, improved working conditions, and the protection of media workers' rights across Namibia.
