Namibia and Finland are strengthening their longstanding cooperation in education, research and innovation.

This was highlighted at a networking reception hosted by the Embassy of Finland, bringing together academics, researchers and education stakeholders to promote continued collaboration between the two countries.

The event highlighted the longstanding academic ties between Namibia and Finland, with both countries continuing to create opportunities for students, lecturers and researchers.

"This two-way flow of Finnish students, researchers and lecturers coming to Namibia strengthens our cooperation and understanding between the academic community. In exchange, Namibians are welcomed in Finland," said Executive Director at MEIYSAC, Edda Bohn. 

The partnership has supported cooperation in areas including healthcare education, teacher training and circular economy expertise, while current initiatives are expanding collaboration in vocational training, renewable energy research and digital learning.

The Finnish Ambassador, Katja Kalamäki, also stressed that academic cooperation goes beyond acquiring qualifications, highlighting the importance of creativity, curiosity and building connections.

"We often think of education as the acquisition of knowledge, skills or qualifications; all that is true, but perhaps education is even more important. It is about curiosity and creativity, and above all, it is about connection." 

The reception also brought together Namibian and Finnish institutions, with discussions centred on creating stronger links between universities, researchers, students and universities.

The two countries say continued academic partnerships remain important in creating opportunities for knowledge exchange, skills development and innovation.
