The Windhoek Agricultural and Livestock Show has cancelled the exhibition of more than 500 animals following the outbreak of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD).

The decision affects the livestock component of the annual show, which is scheduled to open its doors on 29 September 2026.

The Show Society says the cancellation is necessary in light of measures introduced by the Directorate of Veterinary Services to contain the spread of the disease.

FMD is a contagious viral disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals, including cattle, sheep, goats and pigs. Although it does not normally affect humans, it can spread rapidly between susceptible animals and through the movement of infected animals, animal products, people, vehicles and equipment.

The veterinary restrictions introduced following the outbreak include controls on the movement, slaughter and handling of cloven-hoofed animals.

The Show Society says that while the livestock exhibition has been cancelled, all other activities at the Windhoek Agricultural and Livestock Show will proceed as planned.
