Hompa of the Ukwangali Traditional Authority, Eugene Siwombe, has called on the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) to take broadcasting to the heart of rural communities where radio remains the only source of information.
Siwombe made the call during a meeting with NBC Director General Menesia Muinjo and team at the Ukwangali palace at Nkurenkuru.
Hompa Siwombe said most inland communities have no television and rely entirely on radio for news and information.
He urged NBC to go to the ground to witness challenges such as water shortages, pension access and daily village life and to allocate dedicated time for traditional authorities to communicate laws and cultural values.
Siwombe further shared his dissatisfaction with the poor Rukwangali language used by presenters on radio, stating it can be misleading for the young ones.
NBC Director General Muinjo said the national broadcaster wants to correct past gaps where traditional authorities were only relegated to Wato FM while television and digital platforms were underutilised for cultural content.
Muinjo said NBC needs to interrogate its programming to determine how much space is given to traditional leaders and to activities such as community courts and cultural sites.
Both sides agreed to pursue partnership for joint annual planning and regular engagement.
