A platform dubbed "NamTalkies" has been launched in the capital to preserve Namibia's languages in the Digital Age.

UNDP Resident Representative, Amanda Serumara emphasised that Artificial Intelligence should be used to shape people and the languages they speak.

The initiative was launched under the theme "Our Languages Belong Everywhere."

It is a partnership between the UNDP and NUST.

“AI language models do not start with algorithms. They start with people and their communities. They start with language.”

Serumara said many Namibian languages remain underrepresented online, limiting access to information and services.

She also emphasised the importance of building local language data so that Namibians can fully benefit from future technologies.

The Executive Director of Academic Development and Support at NUST, Erling Kavita highlighted the importance of the initiative in championing culture.

“Namibia's multilingualism is one of our greatest cultural assets. Our languages embody our histories, identities, indigenous knowledge systems and ways of understanding the world.”

He said NamTalkies responds directly to the challenge of linguistic exclusion in the digital space.

Dr. Kavita stressed that it also allows communities to actively contribute their knowledge and preserve their languages for future generations.

“NamTalkis also contribute to sustainable development goals, particularly goal number four, quality education by supporting linguistically accessible learning in Sustainable Development Goal 10, reduce inequality by advancing digital inclusion for speaking of underrepresented languages.”

The launch is seen as an important step towards building a more inclusive digital Namibia.
