The National Disability Council of Namibia has engaged stakeholders in the Omaheke Region on the Revised National Policy on Disability for 2025 to 2035 and its Costed Implementation Action Plan. It was aimed to raise awareness of the policy, strengthen stakeholder understanding and ensure that the needs and rights of persons with disabilities are prioritised in service delivery and development planning.

Persons with disabilities raised a number of concerns during the engagement, emphasising challenges in accessing essential services and navigating public spaces.

Among the issues brought forward are road and traffic safety, Head of Legal Compliance and Project Lead Jessica !Gawachab highlighted limited access to services, particularly for those in rural areas.

As the country continues to strengthen its policies and interventions, she added that there is still more work to be done to ensure that no one is left behind.
“Based on the progress made in advancing the rights of persons with disabilities, we have seen a 5% increase in their employment. We are looking to increase that number, particularly by creating more opportunities for persons with disabilities at supervisory and management levels. We have also seen significant improvements in healthcare for persons with disabilities, although some challenges remain. As a government, we recognise that progress is being made in improving the lives of persons with disabilities in the country.”
