74% of men have died in road accidents while 60% have been injured in the past three years on national roads.

This is according to the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund, whose Chief Executive Officer is calling on women to play a greater role in promoting road safety.

A two-day conference for women in road safety ended at Swakopmund on Friday.

The platform was aimed at influencing appropriate road user behaviour and allowing women to find their voice among demands for safer roads.

The Motor Accident Vehicle Fund and sister funds from Southern Africa are part of this platform, which allows the region to share challenges, solutions, and best practices.

Highlighting the statistics of more men dying in road crashes compared to women, the MVA Chief Executive Officer says there is a need for women to urgently promote safer roads.

Other speakers, such as the Deputy Minister of Disability Affairs, agreed with the MVA CEO that more needs to be done to curb the unnecessary loss of lives in motor vehicle crashes.

One of the resolutions taken at the second and previous conferences was the assessment of transport laws and to boost research.

The MVA CEO says a study of the causes of crashes is being finalised and will soon be launched.
