The Khomas Regional Council donated items valued at close to N$ 80 000 to the Windhoek Correctional Facility.

The gesture was made during a visit by the Khomas Governor and the council to the facility to look at the challenges faced by the rehabilitation centre.

The Khomas Regional Council took it upon itself to see challenges first-hand following a public outcry about the conditions of the facility and the alleged bad treatment meted out to inmates.

Accompanied by members of the regional council, the Governor met with prison officials.

After briefing the prison officials about the objective of the visit, the Governor announced a donation of a number of items from the council which she hopes will alleviate some of the challenges experienced by those incarcerated.

The items mainly included toiletries such as toothpaste and toothbrushes, sanitary pads, baby nappies, bathing soaps, Vaseline, and roll-on deodorant.

Governor McLead-Katjirua and her team then toured the facility. 

During the tour, they visited the bakery, where inmates are trained in bread making and work in the dormitories, the tuck shop, and the vehicle repair workshop, among others. 

McLeod-Katjirua called on prison officials, including Nampol, to coordinate with the regional council on matters affecting the region's development. 

Some of the female inmates greeted the governor and her entourage in style.
