The MR44 dual-lane road behind Dune 7 between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay has been renamed the Hifikepunye Pohamba freeway.
The road network was constructed to reduce traffic congestion between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay.
The former president said the development of a proper road network would reduce the cost of transportation and contribute to integration.
He added that transportation infrastructure is critical to the growth of the economy and the social fabric of the country.
Hifikepunye Pohamba hopes that the government will attend to other road networks such as the Walvis Bay-Solitare-Maltahohe road and the network on Impalila Island to benefit Namibians and tourists visiting the area.
Pohamba noted that the road network development in Namibia is improving greatly, while also pointing out the importance of the Walvis Bay port as an economic hub for Namibia and southern African countries.
The Minister of Works and Transport, John Mutorwa, highlighted the need for a proper road network in the country.
