The murder case of 31-year-old Keetmanshoop resident Elleste Plaatjie remains in limbo, as the Office of the Prosecutor General has yet to decide whether to prosecute two police officers accused in his death.
Plaatjie died on 18 January 2023 at Katutura Intermediate Hospital, days after allegedly being assaulted by members of the Namibian Police’s Special Reserve Force.
Officers Bernard Mulisa and Wilbard Neshuku were arrested and charged with murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. They were later released on N$3,000 bail each.
The case was provisionally withdrawn from the Keetmanshoop Magistrate’s Court in September 2023 due to incomplete police investigations.
The police subsequently conducted an identification parade and submitted the docket to the Prosecutor General’s office at the beginning of this year. However, no decision has yet been announced on whether to proceed with prosecution.
NamPol’s Deputy Commissioner Nicodemus Mbango, the ||Kharas Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator, confirmed that the police submitted the finalised docket to the Prosecutor General’s office and are awaiting a decision.
Prosecutor General Martha Imalwa has not responded to questions sent last month regarding the progress of her decision.
