The Acting Chief Regional Officer of the ||Kharas Regional Council, Benny Diergaardt, says about 90 households at Snyfontein will soon be connected to electricity.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy and the ||Kharas Regional Council are the custodians of the project.

Snyfontein has a population of just under 300 residents, consisting of mostly pensioners and unemployed youth.

Residents have for years been urging authorities to provide electricity to the settlement as most, including government buildings, make use of solar panels for their electricity needs.

In an interview with nbc News, Diergaardt said out of the 92 houses, 70 are already connected to pre-paid electricity meters and the rest will be completed during the next two months.

For Snyfontein resident, Katrina Rooi, the news is a welcome relief, as residents had to search for firewood, which is becoming increasingly scarce in the area.

"We have been waiting for the news of electricity at our settlement for many years. We were told that we might have electricity at the end of this year. This is really good news for our people. We are all ready and can really not wait. Our fridges, electric irons, and electric kettles are just waiting for the electricity supply to be connected. We are very excited about this news."

The settlement has one school, which caters for learners from the surrounding farms.
