The tourism sector has been urged to transform Walvis Bay into a world-class tourist destination.

The call was made by the Mayor, Trevino Forbes, during the Tourism Forum meeting, aimed at discussing issues affecting the Walvis Bay tourism sector.

Forbes said the tourism industry is the main source of employment in the town, as it brings hundreds of people each day for regular events including boat tours, excursions to Dune Seven, and visits to Sandwich Harbour.

According to Forbes, this will result in more employment being created as a result of increased purchasing power.

"For every 13 tourists arriving in Namibia, one job is created. Therefore, the main objective is to increase tourist arrivals to generate more employment for Namibians. It is our duty as Walvis Bay's Tourism Forum to ensure that we are all working toward attaining this goal,"

He adds that the town has unintentionally and inadvertently established itself as a town for one-day activities or touring.
