Ali Dharani of the Rani Group of Companies says donations should not be made in anticipation of favours but to plough back into communities.

Dharani made the remarks at the donation of 700 wheelchairs to the governor's office at Opuwo.

The 700 wheelchairs, worth N$2.5 million, will be distributed to all regions to aid those who are bedridden and in dire need of the wheelchairs. 

Last year, the Rani Group of Companies donated 350 wheelchairs.

"Currently we do business in nine regions, but we plan to expand to fourteen regions in due time, but this is not business; this is our corporate social responsibility, so we are not expecting anything in return from the regions, please. So this is our gesture, because every single customer that walks into our store gives us something, and every single customer that walks into our store might have a relative or friend that is affected by a disability. So we want to tell them we are standing with them."

Speaking at the handover of the donation, Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila commended the Rani Group of Companies for their gesture.

"I believe the governors are going to help us identify those that are most in need of benefiting from this donation, and the fact that we are getting this donation doesn't mean we as a government aren't committed to addressing the challenges that are facing our people. In fact, Namibia ranks very highly when it comes to social investment on the human development index; we are next to only one or two countries, which are within our group of peers."

Rani Group of Companies also donated 87 matrasses to Otjerunda Combined School.
