A delegation led by Otjombinde Constituency Councilor Wenzel Kavaka and Omaheke Regional Governor Pijoo Nganate has resolved to provide residents of Otjiuapehuri with a borehole through the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform.
The development is anticipated to end a water dispute with neighboring farmers at Agarob Post.
The meeting also recommended that in the meantime, Otjiuapehuri villagers would get water from Agarob Post through the village's water point committees.
Otjombinde Councilor Kavaka says the farming communities of Otjiuapehuri and Agarob Post should develop a culture of helping one another while the government finds a permanent solution to their plight.
"Firstly, the borehole belongs to Agarob Post, and secondly, because they have water, they must give other villages water. There is a pipeline of 8 km, so residents of Otjiuapehuri shouldn't be disadvantaged from water, so they should get it because Agarob Post has sufficient water."
Kavaka has also appealed to the technical committee to ensure that livestock and humans receive water daily via the provided infrastructure.
Regional governor Nganate stressed that farmers should learn to become self-reliant and refrain from privatizing government infrastructure, which inevitably leads to unnecessary disputes.
"We put emphasis on self-governance; we put emphasis on people to desist from entitlement from owning government things wrongly; we need coexistence; that should be the guiding thing; and it is so disappointing that most farmers involved in this dispute are really not poor farmers but well-off farmers. It's an ongoing process we need to teach each other."
Officials in the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform agreed to assist the water point committee to mitigate disputes.
