A small group of farmers and members of the public that attended the Omitiomire Cooper Mine public engagement urged the forerunners to carefully evaluate the long-term environmental impact on communities surrounding the area proposed for the mine.

Craton Mining and Exploration hold a mining license over the farm Omitiomire, located 140 km northeast of Windhoek.

The proposed mine includes an open-cast pit, an ore processing plant, heap leach pads, waste rock dumps, a workshop, and water management infrastructure, among others.

There is now a proposal for the diversion of Main Road M53 and the Black Nossob River to accommodate the pit dimensions.

Concerns about long-term water provision and surrounding communities benefiting were some of the many concerns raised.

Others were in support of the project because of their willingness to consider opinions and suggestions from the public.

Representatives of Craton Mining and Exploration promised to be transparent throughout the whole process.

This mine can make a significant contribution to employment generation during construction.

The environmental and social impact assessment process is being conducted by Environmental Compliance Consultancy.
